Social Security Number on Military ID’s to be replaced with DOD ID number

After decades of Military members Social Security Number (SSN) being used for identifcation purposes, the Department of Defense (DOD) has announced they will be removing all Social Security numbers from Military and DOD ID cards and replacing them with a DOD Identification Number.

Removal of dependent SSN’s started in December of 2008 with XXX-XX-XXXX being inserted in place of the social security number. Starting June 2011 sponsor’s SSN’s will be replaced with a DOD ID Number on all Military/DOD ID cards according to the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC).

With identity theft on the rise, this comes as great news. Social Security numbers on Military ID cards have long since created a security risk from cards either being lost or stolen. New cards will be issued upon renewal, or if your expiration date reads INDEF and you would like your SSN removed, contact your nearest RAPIDS ID Card facility for an appointment.
