35 Years after the close of the Vietnam War* the famous novel "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien has been re-issued to the general public. Originally written and published in 1990 the book is celebrating a successful 20 years in which it has become part of High-School english classes through-out the world. This includes my own High-School, however my class missed out and ended up reading/studying Tim O'Brien's novel "In The Lake of the Woods".
Tim O'Brien's novel "The Things They Carried" follows a fictional platoon of soldiers in Vietnam and tells a series of out-of-order stories/anecdotes that interweave with his own experience in Vietnam.

Tim O'Brien appeared on PBS News Hour for an interesting interview that I thought you would all enjoy. It was actually done in late April however I missed it and only found it on the main page of the PBS Website (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/) earlier today.
Here are a few videos from the interview:

The following link contains another segment of the interview not featured in the above and another vide where Tim O'Brien reads an excerpt from "The Things They Carried"

This was taken off the reading list for my class because the teacher thought it promoted warfare, so the class checked the book out from the county library, out of 20 I believe 18 kids bought their own copies after reading it.

I take it your teacher was widely considered to be an idiot?

Thanks for the post, Wolf.... I read this book a lot of years ago and enjoyed it too. I'm sure that it is still on my bookshelf. I guess I'll have to get it down again and give it a reread.

And if you were to understand where this book came from, it wouldn't be out of order stories. It was first published all as one book in 1990, but was as early as 1978 and 1980, and various stories here and there............ and check your copy. It's inside the front cover. Right there in a paragraph that contains the word "Playboy" as in magazine.............

You know Rusty, I was really tempted to request the book from you but I was quite impressed with Tim O'Brien's novel "In The Lake of The Woods" that I think I'll just go ahead and purchase a copy of "The Things They Carried".

The "In the lake of the woods" is a fine movie and cheaper than the book, but not the same as the book. Hash info for downloading the movie is : f6dd887e0311c442ca7a2e8138896e7f58493e76
