So word on the street is that there will be a big pay raise this year. OK maybe the smallest since 72'

I was reading on military.com the other day and someone was trying to say that a E1 made 30k a year. Unfortunately I deleted it from my email and can't find the article now
The basic premise of the article was that with the great benefits like free medical a pvt was making great pay far above his peers outside of the military
With the 1.4 pay raise under 2 years in a pvt will be making $1467 per month or $17604 per year. That comes out to $8.48 cents per hour IF.... one worked only 40 hours per week. With the current state of war one will spend time in theater and will be spending a whole lot more that 40 hours a week doing the task set before them.

I remember in the good ole days as a pfc I got a sheet of paper that claimed I made the equivalent of 20k per year back in 84'. Back then they were charging $500/month just to live in a open squad bay and each meal was close to $8

Many years later as I am getting ready to sign a lease for a 2 bedroom Apartment for $505/month I look back and think that the equivalent pay was crap. OK in 84' I was pissed about it and maybe I still am. By time you throw things in like free parking it really adds up.

The thing that really got my goat was the free medical that people were complaining about. Your job is to get shot at. People actively try to hunt you down and kill you.
Not to mention that one is Property of the US Government. How many people would take a job making under $9/hour that if you came in late to work one day, you would be fined 25% of your monthly pay get a demotion and have to stay at work without going home for the next 2 weeks. Then on top of it every night having to dig holes and fill them back in for no apparent reason.
What if one day you came into work and you were having a bad day. You see your Boss coming but you do not greet him properly. Again 25% monthly pay taken, demotion, 2 weeks staying at work and this time you get to cut grass with scissors.
Or you don’t agree with your boss and he is treating you like crap. In the privacy of his office you give him a piece of your mind and vent for a while. BAM if you are lucky you only loose 25% of your monthly pay, get a demotion and spend some time at work. In truth you will be demoted back to the lowest position and then sent to jail for 30- 90 days.
So what does one get if they don’t ever come in late or miss any days, always greet your boss properly and never ever yell at your boss. Wait for it…….
One gets a medal that they now have to wear on their uniform and have it properly displayed if not one might get a 25% loss of that months pay a demotion and get to spend 2 weeks at work doing meaningless work on what should be their own time.
I say at 30k a year if one actually made that it would be too little.

It may be free medical but its also crappy medical! The Instructors here aren't even allowed to make appointments for yearly physicals! They are only allowed to go to sick call if they are sick in order for there to be room for Civilians and students (Privates) to have appointments! Pretty much medical priority goes like this: DOD Civilians, Privates, Retiree's, Family Members and then that is it. The Instructors cannot make appointments without going through a whole mess of red tape and sneaky tactics!

But then again DOD Civilians also get priority in housing as well, so I guess I should not be surprised!

P.S. I am speaking of how the Army works now, no idea about the other branches.

I might say something about the DOS employees but I may end up going that route when this job is over.

LOL a lot of service members are getting out currently just to come back as a DOD Civilian because the pay is so much more and they are treated better (better medical, pay, housing, etc) =)
