None of those movies have anything on the Boot camp scenes of FMJ. Did any of you see "Heartbreak Ridge", That Clint Eastwood flick about Recon and Grenada, very inaccurate but funny as hell

We have gone through 3 copies of Heartbreak Ridge at our house. It's one of mine and my husbands favorites. He took it to Iraq with him, which sucks because now it's been a year since I have watched it.

Ever at all, surprisingly enough.
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): I'm sorry.
Eversmann (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001326/): You have nothing to be sorry about. You saved Twombly, you did it perfect.
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): You okay Twombs?
Twombly (http://imdb.com/name/nm0362766/): Yeah, I'm okay, Jamie.
Eversmann (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001326/): See, you did what you were trained to do. You should be proud of that, be proud of that.
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): Ev?
Eversmann (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001326/): Yeah.
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): Do me a favor, okay? Tell my parents that I fought well today. And tell them that I... that I... that I fought hard.
Eversmann (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001326/): You're gonna tell them yourself okay, Jamie?
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): Are... are the humvees here?
Eversmann (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001326/): They're coming, Jamie. They're coming. You just gotta hold on for a little longer. Can you do that?
Smith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0389324/): I can, I can. It's nothing. It's nothing
Man, that scene made me cry. When I saw this movie, I had never heard about the conflict in Somalia and that had really upset me anyway because my cousin had been in Kuwait with the Army just a few months before the Somalia conflict took place. That scene just reminded me of what could have happened to him (or any other service member).

I've got a great Tora! Tora! Tora! story
a couple friends and i were in a bar in Naha on Okinawa, it was a "Native" bar, all Okinawans (some old WWII vets)when we walked in.we got some funny looks as we parked our asses at a table. we ordered a round of beer noticing a TV in the corner had a movie starting. yep, you guessed it, Tora! Tora! Tora!
20+ Okinawans and 4 Marines setting in a bar watching this classic film
it was bilingual with both English and Japanese subtitles.
the "natives" would yell "Banzai!" when they would see heroism on the jap side. us Marines would give a resounding "Houuuu Rahhhhhhh" at the appropriate time.
it was a blast, we were buying beer for the house, they were buying shots of Saki for the house.
it is a long movie, and by the time the credits were rolling, we were all pretty shitfaced.
one of my many memories of Okinawa i will never forget!

Although the idea of what makes a war movie is subjective, so how can it be defined, can we defined is as a movie that involves soldiers, fighting with military weapons or machinery, military strategy or events that directly lead up to or result from a military-type battle.
and by doing so we can also add the following movie to the list.
Dances With Wolves
But I also enjoy the following movies some old some not so old.
Sergeant York
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Pork Chop Hill
30 Seconds Over Tokyo
Schindler's List

Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Private Joker, are you trying to offend me ?
the best war movie of the past 20 years, if not all time, and it didn’t even crack the Top 400 ballot. Words fail to express how wrong that is.
“Full Metal Jacket,” Which was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Matthew Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio and R. Lee Ermey (in the role that made him a star), could be considered two great war movies for the price of one. The first half of the film shows Marine recruits at boot camp, preparing for Vietnam, while the second half deals with the violence and uncertainty of that war.
Perhaps it was the vulgarity and brutality of the film that made it such a tough sell for the voters. Or the vulgarity. Maybe the racism. Did I mention the vulgarity? This film is
Not for the faint of heart, “Full Metal Jacket” is about as real as it comes without signing a contract. Even today, many of the themes still ring true.

Really? I though Clint veered pretty far off course from the book, plus it was boring in some spots. Thought Clint ++++ed up the directing part pretty good. The book was great. In a 1 to 10 poll, I would give it a 10; the movie, using the same scale, was a 4 at most.
But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The book is always better than the movie. Except for maybe The Stand by Stephen King that book was the longest most boring book I have ever read. It made russian authors books look and be exciting.

I think the "Code Talkers" could have been a better movie had they used variations of sounds (perhaps like the real sounds of gunfire) for all of the different automatic weapons they used all full autos sounded EXACTLY alike, which is pure BS; otherwise, it was a great story and movie.

I think the first part -- YES; the second part pure fantasy on the part of the director.

Was it just me, or did Flags of our Fathers seem very... derogatory?
It trampled on the names of the men who raised the flag a few times over, and made the Marines look like... poopheads for lack of a better word.
Letters from Iwo did the same thing. I would have shot the two prisoners as well, but there's no need to add that in the movie. It gives the Corps a bad rep. Now everyone that sees that movie will think we are heartless and cruel. (at least circa 1944)

Whether it paints a negative picture of Marine or not, it does happen n war, right? Didn't the Marines have an investigation of those guys shooting a wounded insurgent in a building? It happens. Those boots on the ground felt they were in danger, and did what they had to do. Didn't Haditha happen? So why can't it happen in the movies? Not derogatory, just a fact of war that most are not happy with.

WWII in the pacific was a total no holds barred no quarter asked or given war. It was a blood bath. Every one talks about D-Day but that type of combat in the Pacific was the norm. It is my opinion that if the Marines were not taking care of the Pacific (ok the Department of the Navy) much of the Pacific would still belong to Japan. I base that on the fact that every campaign that the Army took part of in the Pacific on the Army end it did not turn out so well and frankly they could not do what needed to be done. Before any one brings up New Guinea that wasn't the Army's doing but more the natives and the environment taking out the Japs in large numbers, not to mention !st Mar Div kicking some butt also.

With Flags of Our Father's I meant the part about the Marine being a drunk, and getting in fights with MP's and whatnot.. If it's the truth I'd understand more, but it's not necessary to convey the message. Why do they see the throw a national hero under the train?

Marines and Sailors actually used to have a pretty bad rep (Cuss like a Sailor or Fight like a Marine). If Mr. Eastwood was going for any historical truth in his film, that may have been a true incident.

The whole point of the movie was the truth of it. Ira Hayes ( I believe that was his name ), did become a drunk and died of alcoholism with his face in the dirt. The truth does not change the facts of the battle. It just enhances it. The six men that raised the flag were heroes in the eyes of the American public, but only Rene Gagnon tried to cash in on that. The other two of the three that got off the Island tried to deny the hero aspect. Part of Hayes problem was the fame that was pushed upon him. He finally convinced the Marines to send him back into combat, but still continued drinking when he got out. He just couldn't escape the demons. Sometimes, life does suck. :( ... You know how a 3 year old looks at his dad, and thinks he is perfect, no matter what he does wrong? I guess that's just how I feel about the Corps. She's perfect in my eyes
The Corps is my daddy...
