I did a search to see if this was discussed before and it hadn't looked as if it has.

My questions deals with the "Unread Posts" you find on the upper right hand corner as shown in the example:

Welcome, HMC8404.
You Have 473 Unread Posts (http://www.usmchangout.com/msg/search.php?do=getnew)
You last visited: July 25th, 2007 at 10:12 AM

Is there anyway to "clear" this counter? I'll never get around to reading some of them now and would like to clear this from time to time if its possible? If not, can it be an option to turn on or off?

Just wondering.

Try going out of town for a few days ... I came back to 700+ unreads. I'm such a perfectionist about certain things and it drives me crazy not to have my count cleared.

I was wondering if there was a way to put the welcome aboards in a different category and not have them count in the unread posts. I've quit replying to them lately because I didn't want to add to everyone's count.

Mine used to be up over 1300 ... and I got it down that much but that's it for me! Ugh!

That's probably where these tally from. I usually unsubscribe to these after I respond and unless the thread gets more involved, theres no need to go back into it.

When I got back from vacation this week I had over 1100. I went to each individual forum topic (example: REPORTING FOR DUTY), and then go to the tools dropdown. From there, I just click on "mark this forum as read" (I think that's what it says). That took me down to zero and I just went from there.

Hope this helps.

Yeah! A cool and helpful shortcut!!!!!! Now I can get that 400+ count down. See? I've already knocked off a bunch since this morning .... sad to say, I haven't accomplished anything around here except that!

My daughter has come in here an untold number of times and sighed because I was still on. Awwwww ... I feel so bad for her .... NOT!!:p

Thanks here, too. I didn't realize we could do that. :)

I know that sound! That's not a sigh of "I want mom's love and attention" ... its the sigh of "I want my time on the computer and mom's still hogging it." ;)

Yep, yep, yep - I'm good at translating sighs! But now that I have the hot tip of the day, I'm down to 376 unreads and I'm going to let her on.

Now, I just need the mind-reader button, that will list only the posts that I would WANT to read .....

Okay, I'm letting her on now - BFN - MDWO (my daughter want on)

suck it up and read them is my advise I didn't show up for 3 months and still read them all. After all I might have written something and you should always read that and agree

Which is eventually going to get harder and harder to do because so many, like me, have joined recently. The numbers keep growing and the number of posts per day do also. I've noticed a difference just since I started coming here. I kind of skim the article tag lines to see if they interest me. Then I look for the hot threads, then I look at all of the ones that I've replied to in the past. If I have time after that, I look for topics that grab my attention.

Mostly, I've got to make sure that I don't turn into one of the parents who ignored/neglected their kids because of the time they spent online! I don't want poop on my screen!

All of the action makes it hard to be a moderator. I try to read all of the posts but some days it is tough.

I didn't even think of the moderators! Geeez ... at least we have more of a choice. How many moderators are there? Maybe you guys will have to start divvying up the forums or something.

I pretty much read every post but I'm gone again for about 4-5 days with limited internet so I will have a pile to read when I get back.

We have two moderators and Bridget. We did split up the threads but you all still post alot.

It is fun to read the posts. Sorry it we do not moderate the new posts very fast. I try to get on at least two times a day.

Hank - I think you guys are doing a great job! Especially for the amount of posts that are posted in a day! I get on in the morning and there is at least 10 new posts, At lunch time there is usually about 20 new posts (sometimes more) and then I get on again at night (yeah, I have no other life, lol) and there is anywheres from 20 - 40 new posts. This seems to happen almost every day! You won't hear me biotchin' at you about not getting something moderated, etc. I'd nominate you all for "moderators of the year" awards, if there was such a thing! And before any of you get the idea that i'm being a suck up, think again....I ain't no pansy @ss Marine Momma, you know:D

I've been meaning to do the "mark as read" thing for a long time now!!! You just reminded me! I'm tired of looking at my 1200 unread posts. GGrrr!

Took the weekend off had 139 unread plus the new post while I am replying now down to 5 unread yeah. Now Dial up would really suck If we didn't have 20 sec timer on reading post I could zoom zoom zoom and a boom boom
