View Full Version : Would you use individual blogs here?

DearMilSpouse
August 6th, 2007, 08:36
So Vbulletin (the software we use to run these forums) is coming up with a mod that would allow users to have individual blogs with privacy settings, etc. Think MySpace blogs. It has not been released yet as it is still in the beta stages but once released, would y'all be interested in using USMC Hangout as your blogging headquarters so to speak. In other words would you use it if I bought it and installed it?

I think the privacy settings will be simular to myspace: Viewable to all, only viewable to registered members, viewable by only those on your buddy list, or private (viewable only to you). It is a per entry basis. So you may have one entry you want viewable to everyone, but yet another one only viewable by you.

I would pass on this only because I have two blogs already on my own servers. Where were you when I was shelling out $60/year for domains and hosting? *L* Actually, I broke away from MySpace and moved to the Wordpress blogs instead.

I would definitely subscribe and read every blog that was posted.

We actually have wordpress right now and I could allow users to have their own blog already. But I absolutely hate wordpress which is why I am trying to get away from it. Right now that is where the staff blogs are. And vb is integrated with word press as of right now so users do not have to re-register, but I would like something where users would not actually leave the forums like they have to do now to read a blog. Plus allow them to have their own. Wordpress doesn't really offer a lot of privacy settings when it comes to posts.

I haven't tried the new wordpress (still have the old version installed I think) I was too chicken to try and upgrade it because of the mod I have installed to intergrate the 2. It was a pain in the ass trying to get it work the first time.

Oh and I forgot included with the blogs is new interactive profiles. They say that the profiles will be much more like MySpace. So kind of like a 2 in one deal. And if they charge the same amount for the project tools they released which is $50 it may just very much be worth it.

And if anyone is asking where is project tools on here. We don't have it as I did not see a need for it, lol.

Anyway for more info here was their inital announcement about it:

Blog and Social Networking

In response to user requests we have been working on a blogging system that will fully integrate with vBulletin. vBulletin Blog (a working title) will allow sites running vBulletin to extend the functionality to allow forum users to maintain weblogs from their user control panel and leverages the extensive vBulletin permissions system to enable administrators to fine-tune the features available to their visitors.

Blogs can be made private, with blog authors themselves able to create a list of users permitted to view their messages, while the vBulletin inline moderation system makes it easy to ensure that blogs and comments do not contain unwanted material.

Trackback and pingback support is fully integrated, so site owners can expect to quickly find related sites linking back to their own, improving search engine rankings and building traffic.

Additionally, vBulletin Blog adds social networking functionality to your vBulletin installation, which will allow your users to quickly and safely make connections and form relationships. Member profile pages are extended to include an enhanced buddy system, visitor tracking, blog integration and a comment system, all housed within a new and improved profile page template together with improved delivery of existing profile information.

Oh also it would allow users to import their blog entries that they have made elsewhere (like wordpress) to their blog here.

Like Inner, I too have 3 blogs elsewhere, but each of those are private.

What kind of bells and whistles would be available with the blog? Can we dress up the blog or would it be like a thread? If it's limited to just thread capabilities, I wouldn't be interested.

If you use the latest version of Wordpress (2.2), they have Widget support built into it and it makes it very easy to use Wordpress and mod it to the way you want it. Alternately, you can install widget support into the older versions.

I blog about my hometown at Blogging Tiskilwa (http://www.tiskilwa.net). I am the only blogger there and it's not a daily record but I update whenever there is something to update. Believe it or not, I actually get a fair number of hits there and I am as boring as it gets when it comes to blogging. No one ever clicks on my google ads though. *LMAO*

I checked it out Bridget. It doesn't look like you can change the background colors though. That is something I would want to do, choose my own color scheme. I've seen it before on a christian site that uses this software and I didn't like it there. I don't like what I see on this one either.

Right now I'm using blogspot.com and I can set up my own template. The ability to create my own flair and personality on it is a must. If we couldn't do that here, I just wouldn't be interested in it.

The bottom line is that if you are paying for it, it's probably not a good idea for you. It would be like a toy at Christmas...everyone would use for 2 weeks and then it would be forgotten not long after. If it's free, you have nothing to lose then go ahead and do it.

No kidding. I think I have seen that you have looked at mine like, 10-15 times. It's like you are stalking me or something.

... but not at the price of losing our profiles like they are. I love this profile tool here. I never saw it like this anywhere else before.

I'd have to agree with inner on this one ... you'd get a few who'd use it at first and then let it go, so if it's costing you, I wouldn't. But thats just me.

No the profiles will be improved. There will still be the buddy list, commenting system, etc.. On the back end it will be alot more easier for me to tend to as all those mods will be rolled into one instead of 3 or 4 different ones I have to continuously update. The profile layout here I designed. Not sure how the new layout will look but I don't have to use it. I can keep the layout I have now and just add in the new functions.

Yes, the KC-130 can land on the carriers. They were testing it for the new Super COD, but it was not a practical choice. Several landings and touch and goes were completed on the Forrestal. Barr3To had the BuNo off a bit, it was 149798.

Ship Pete ... that there is a ship.

Boat tends to refer to the subs or smaller crafts that are carried about ships like that.

Its why the command master chief is called "COB" (Chief of the Boat) aboard a sub, not a ship/carrier.

Nick352
August 6th, 2007, 14:58
Here are the weight stats. I guess they got fairly close to the 138,000 mark for a Herk.

The KC-130 weighed 85,000 pounds on the first landing, and landings were made in progression up to a gross weight of 121,000 pounds. At maximum weight, the crew used only 745 feet for takeoff and 460 feet for landing. One landing at a weight of 109,000 pounds required 495 feet to stop and that was in a heavy squall. At the end of the tests, the crew simply took off from the point on the deck where they had stopped. On takeoff, there was only 15 feet clearance between the KC-130’s wingtip and the ship’s control “island.”

You know that brings to mind when I as in 353, we had an aircraft Buno 147572 or 147573, or maybe it was 148249 I forget. But anyway they had taken the pods off for some reason. We took it on a cross country trip. To Texas I think. Well on the way back we were loaded with a standard fuel load,(with pods off you can put more in the outboards) and started our climb. Well as we started to climb, the Plane Commander wanted to see If he could break the record in 353 for Altitude. We stepped climbed to 41,000 ft. Thats right sports fans 41,000 ft. It was hotter then Heck in the back. When we leveled off we reported to center with our finally altitude. They called back and questioned our flight level. They said that they have never heard of a c-130 that high. Our Plane Commander answered back, "That's because we were a Marine KC130f. We fly higher, penetrate deeper, and have longer hoses.....

Damn, those things are big AND heavy-crew or not. I know 2 things; 1) UH-1C goes up-with a little down on the nose-flies anywhere, and with the aid of gravity-lands.Gotta love 'em. 2), my drill instructors taught us about boats, and the navy. Treat a Navy Corpman with the utmost respect, and never leave home without one. Followed with "how to properly get on a boat-and I quote Sgt Migel Gonzales Plt 2129- "go up that plank thing, salute the Stars and Bars and tell the squid your comin abord and have a fishing licence." then hand him a copy of your orders. That Marine never lied to me about 1 thing.

I will put them up as soon as they release them. I know that they are in the last of the beta stage but they have not given a release date yet.

Until then if any of you want to write any articles on different subjects we have the articles system in place:

http://www.usmchangout.com/msg/vbnews.php

All you need to do to start writing articles is join the Hangout Authors Group. Just go to your account:
http://www.usmchangout.com/msg/usercp.php
Scroll down the page, look on the left hand side for Group Memberships, click the link, select join group for the Hangout Author Group, then click Join Group. It will then ask you a reason for joining. Just put whatever you want. I check for requests at least once a day. Once I get it I will approve it and you can start writing articles.

Your group membership also shows up on your profile as well.
