Over 70% of the United States annual population growth (and over 90% of California, Florida, and New York) results from immigration.

The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay) $70 BILLION a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University].

The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a NEGATIVE.

29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

And then there's this.....

About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of
Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2000 years prior:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations, from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage "

Professor Joseph Olson, of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some 40 percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

It's enough to make you sit down and think for a while isn't it? What the hell are we paying taxes for? It's not only LA either, if you go to Chicago, there are quite a few Spanish stations on the radio up there. I remember reading that Chicago has an estimated illegal immigrant population of about 1.5 million. I can't vouch for the accuracy (because I can't remember the source), but it's probably not far from the mark.

Thanx for the link on that info. The immigration problem is one we definately need to handle. And the recent steps taken are a start but not nearly enough. There has been a great deal of public pressure that has driven this action. If we settle for the cookie we were thrown, that is all the change we will ever see. If we continue to put pressure and demand more change, perhaps we will get it.

Results based on completed online interviews with 11,490 individuals, conducted between February, 2005 and July, 2005.

Immigration Poll

The United States is a nation built on immigrants. Polling Point asked respondents how they feel about immigration today. Most of you believe that the number of immigrants allowed to come to the United States should be decreased.
In a recent Polling Point survey, 64 percent of you believe that immigration should be decreased, compared to 14 percent who believe it should be increased, and 19 percent of respondents who think it should stay the same.
Age is a strong determining factor of how you view immigration. Younger respondents are more open to immigration, while older respondents are steadfastly against it.

According to respondents, 69 percent of you believe immigrants hurt the U.S. economy and 26 percent believe immigrants help the economy. There are stark differences between respondents of different education levels. Respondents with less than a college education believe immigration hurts more than those who have a college degree.

Race also elicits various answers from respondents. Most immigrants to the United States today are Latinos, and according to the survey, Latino respondents tend to be more supportive of immigrants. Examining the same question of whether or not immigrants help or hurt the U.S. economy a majority of whites and blacks say they hurt they economy, whereas a majority of Hispanic respondents say immigrants help the economy.

Whether you believe that there should be more immigrants here or if immigrants help the economy, four out of five of you do not believe illegal immigrants should be eligible for government services such as Medicaid or food stamps.

Respondents are emphatically against offering illegal immigrants Medicaid or food stamps. But, when asked if children of illegal immigrants should be able to attend schools, another government service, results are a less one-sided. According to respondents, 24 percent do support allowing children of illegal immigrants to attend schools, but a majority, 61 percent are opposed to it.
On this question women are also more supportive than men of allowing children of illegal immigrants to attend school.

One question raised in the immigration debate is who is to blame: illegal immigrants for crossing the border without permission or the employers who willfully hire illegal immigrants. Polling Point asked what penalties an employer should face for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant. Many of you favored a very strong penalty, with a majority of you saying the penalty for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant should be both a fine and jail time.
