I have a friend from Nebraska who went to San Diego. I'm from Indiana so that puts me in the PI group, but who knows where I'll live when I join. And, if I go the officer route I won't ever hit either depot. He's never talked too much about it one way or the other, but I think he didn't have any major problems with it. He's over in Iraq right now but should be coming home in about a month.

Everyone west of the Mississipi river goes to MCRD San Diego. Everyone to the East goes to Parris Island. However, you can request a change to Parris Island ONLY. Say your dad went to PI, then they can change it for you.
I'm from Texas, so I'm off to San Diego 20070714.
wlvrne19, what RSS are you with?

I always thought that Illinois went to San Diego as well. I did and I'm from Illinois. However, I know several Marines from Illinois that went to Paris Island, as well as San Diego. I'm not sure how they run it.

As a general rule this is correct. If your dad attended PI and you are from the west you can also attend PI. I would think that the Marine Corp needs also play into this. PI may be full so you could end up at SD.

I have several friends that went to San Diego for boot. I also know that my Father was in the 790th Platoon in 1943 in San Diego, I will post a photo soon of that.

Too bad we don't have a Marine Corps Recruiter present to address this farce. I'm gonna have to go with Hank and say it depends on the logistics, although PI may be the case most of the time.

That Mississippi River dividing line for boot camp is an urban legend that's been around for a long time, however it's not factual.
Enlistees attend boot camp by Recruiting District.
Marine Corps Districts 1, 4 and 6 go to Parris Island.
Marine Corps Districts 8, 9 and 12 to San Diego
Of the three Districts that report to Parris Island, only one has a Recruiting Station that covers territory West of the Mississippi River. New Orleans Recruiting Station covers Louisiana and parts of Mississippi.
Marine Corps District 9, which sends enlistees to San Diego, straddles the Mississippi River. East of the Mississippi, District 9 covers all of Illinois, Wisconsin, the majority of Indiana and almost all of Michigan.
If you feel a need to verify this information or you want to see what Recruiting District you reside in, you can start your research at the Marine Corps Recruiting Command web site at https://www.mcrc.usmc.mil/ (https://www.mcrc.usmc.mil/) Look on the lower left side under links.
One more item under historical trivia. Prior to 1 January 1972 the Marine Corps issued Service Numbers instead of using your Social Security number as they do today. Those Service Numbers (contrary to what some may believe, they were commonly referred to as serial numbers) were assigned to the Recruiting Districts in blocks. When your district used up all its assigned Service Numbers, another block was assigned. For the most part you could tell if someone was "boot" to you by his or her Service Number. Sometimes that didn't work because a district like Texas and the Southwest might not use their numbers as quickly as someplace like District 9 (the Midwest) so you could be in the same platoon with someone who had a Service Number lower than yours. For example, my serial number started with 20 and I had some guys in my platoon whose serial numbers started with 19. Closing historical trivia now.

OK. Jerry when My Father Was in the Corps, in the Day his service # was
551846 , and the link you gave is probably good but I get a warning against opening or using it so if you could help me out here and decipher this it would be great.

The warning is a standard Internet Explorer security warning. You get that when you visit a site that doesn't have a Microsoft Security Certificate that your I.E. security settings recognizes. That site is an official Marine Corps web site so there is no reason to be concerned. You get two warnings so just click OK for each and proceed.
I don't understand what you are trying to decipher. Your dad was Old Corps, really Old Corps. I've never seen any records of dates of service by serial number, if that's what your asking.

Woo Hoo! Awesome on the new ship date, PooleeRogers08! Before you know it, you'll be stepping onto those yellow footprints and be on your way to that Eagle, Globe and Anchor! Get cranking on getting into the best shape you can and be sure to keep yourself motivated! As Gunga said, get your girl on here ~ there is plenty of girlfriends here to help her through it all and she'll be able to make some pretty good friendships as well.

Naw, you get to be close personal friends with them. We had a full service funeral for one that got whacked by a platoon mate. We loved and cared for them.

Best of luck to you both! Be sure to stop in once you carry the title Marine so that we can congratulate you. By all means, have the gf check out the site, she won't regret it!

I think they both have their own "charm" One could go to Paris Hilton Island and become a flea bitten Marine or one could go to San Diego and become a Hollywood Marine I hear they issue you sunglasses there(not true by the way) Oh and by the way when the recruiter tells you about running on the beach do not picture Bay watch or any other TV show. Picture instead a beach torn up with/by Amtracks deep sand and your buttocks being truely kicked. I remember thinking why are we not running 15 foot over where its nice and smooth and hardened by the waves.
