Anyone watch it? They had to put down the only filly in the race because she broke both front ankles

I didn't watch the Derby, but I read about it. How sad. She had to be euthanized where she fell, as she didn't have a leg to stand on to be splinted and taken by ambulance. Sad, not only for the horse but for her rider, as well. He knew something was wrong with the way she was galloping and tried to help her stay up. I'd say it's sad for the owner, but they usually are mainly only in it for the money and prestige, that comes with having a race horse.

I am sure the money and prestige may play apart but it isn't all about that. the horse had a lot of heart

One of my older sisters is very much into the Derby every year. Of course she owns a horse and boards another on her property ... so she's a "horse" woman. She has tons of stuff on horses like I have of Steelers/Penguins ... and this is her Super Bowl/Stanley Cup.
She lives an hour away and last year my daughter and I spent the weekend with her to watch. I couldn't believe how she gets into this. We had to bring "hats" like you see the women wear in Kentucky. She makes mint julips and all (yuch!). But it was a blast!
I didn't watch it LIVE, I had watched a lot leading up to it before I had something to do. I'm glad I wasn't watchng after hearing what happened. When I heard the only girl in the race, despite her running her heart out behind the favorite Big Brown and actually finished 2nd, had to be euthinized having shattered her two front legs? I'm glad we didn't see it live. The owner looked really distraught.
There are a lot of interesting stories to come out of the Derby and the Preakness that follows.

There was a major stir on one of the talk shows this AM about the fact that they just kind of tossed the fact that Eight Belles was euthanized aside

But I saw the interview of the owner who said he jumped on the ambulance and rode out there and saw that there was nothing they could do to save her. It's a sad side note to these races. A broken leg, not to mention two which she had, is a kiss of death to a horse (especially one used to running).

I just read an article on ESPN that PETA is trying to say the jockey should have held up the horse instead of pushing her. It's going to get ridiculous real quick

The only thing peta is good for is making sandwiches.

That may be because it is expected when a race horse breaks a leg. I suppose those jackasses in PETA wanted the horse to just suffer with the two broken legs that could not be repaired?

They're trying to say that the horse was injured before she collapsed

well yeah you don't collapse before your injured and neither does a horse.
