I asked my mom Saturday night if she would let me do PT with my recruiter and this is the reply I got from my mom, "Why do you want to join and have someone in your face spitting on you and cussing you?" I simply said, I'm not signing any papers, besides I'm 16 and I can't join right now, all I'm doing is working out with the Recruiter and some Poolees, but I doubt she'll let me.

man, i wish i had a way to tell you exactly how to convince them, but i don't. you could play the "if you love me" card. but it doesnt sound like they would fall for it.

tell them that you need to excercise for your health, and this is just a way of making sure you do it, giving you the moto to get it done.and say "sedentary" alot itll make it sound like you thought it out. otherwise all you can do is try (bug) (annoy) to get them to let you.

Not sure if you've been warned but do NOT wear anything that has "USMC", "Marines", or anything to do with the corps when you get on your flight to MCRD or Parris Island. Makes you easy prey for your DS.

I've heard this from numerous Marines. My exhusband shipped off to bootcamp that same day back in 2003...its also my older sisters birthday.

GOOD LUCK! Definately do lots of running before you leave. Get use to it now...

Not to be picky, but it is DI in the Corps (or Drill Instructor), the Army and Air Force have Drill Sgts.

thanx for the shirt advice, valeirie. but i kinda of knew that, ive also heard that you do go with a shaved head of with any hicky's, lol.

Wannabe, get on them make sure they address what your telling them and not just blow it off the table, persistence, my friend, respectful but persistent.

and yea its july 07, 2009. a whole year from now. but im glad cuz i know im gonna miss my family, i actually think that will be the hardest part of boot (having not experienced it).

PooleeRogers08

I've never heard anything about not being too moto at boot camp... And the Drill Instructors you meet on monday are not your drill instructors. You meet your DI's on Black Friday, so your drill instructors will never know that you wore a Marine's shirt to Boot.

PooleeRogers08
June 20th, 2008, 00:19
If you lived in North Texas, I'd run with you.

wlvrne19
June 20th, 2008, 03:58
or south texas id make you run... you spend too much time being depressed cuz mommy and daddy dont support you, but you have to realize that if your going to accomplish what you want to your going to have to get used to all sorts of things that arent perfect, or fair. and when crunch time comes you have to know when to stop crying (im not saying your crying :) ) and when to nut up and start carrying your own weight.

the nice thing to say to you is that is mean of your parents to put you down like that and that its okay.

but i think the realistic thing is that maybe you need to work harder to get where you need to be, then they wouldnt be able to pull the "you cant do it" card.

ive seen all your posts about your fitness and your parents and all the things that are against you, and ive seen the posts where you describe how motivated you get and how much you want it. but you gotta put them together, your parents can stop you from signing but not from working, and maybe if they saw you working you tail off without Marines around to motivate you, if they saw you working off of the desire thats in your heart, then maybe it would help.

Ive never seen you, but i feel for you, heck ill even say i like ya (having never met you), but stop worrying about your parents and start worrying about you, when get yourself ready, then move on to what should be the bigger challenge. If your parents wont let you work out with the Marines then so be it, you dont need them, go work out on your own, let your dad see YOU running through town, then i think youll have a good argument against them, and for your dream.

and sorry if it sounds mean, just offering help

I am going to back up Red Dawn here. I think some really good points have been made. Matt, you need to get out there with that CD I made for you, and get to stomping. Run your ass off and run some more. Show the folks the drive you have. Kristin said let the you can'ts be a motivator and show you can. You can and will. I would not go by light poles, I would go by miles, to get yourself in the right mind set. I know about 30 people here that know you can do it, so you have to believe in yourself.

Marine_wannabe
June 20th, 2008, 08:17
It's hard because I see the poles and I know how far they are, I guess its mental like you said, I'm going to work my ass off all day every day even if it kills me. Nobody is going to tell me what I can and can't do.

Now, lets see it! Remember none of us are telling you to quit listening to your parents in all things...Think if you prove to yourself you can do it, that will help your dad see you can do it, too. Best of luck and do not quit!

PooleeRogers08

I should have signed my papers in February 2007, when I turned 17. My parents were completely against it though. I never gave up though. I bought 5 different Marine Corps flags to put on my walls, I decorated the room with posters, and my truck with decals, I ran every day, I met with my recruiter two-four times a week to work out, I talked to my parents as much as possible about the goals I had, and I didn't quit.

It took 8 months, but in October my mom signed the papers. Persistence is the key. And you'll need that attribute in the Corps as well.

Have you seen the new Marine Corps commercial "Leap"? Different circumstances, same message.

xValerieAnnx
June 20th, 2008, 11:17
I have a cousin that enlisted in the Navy 2 weeks after he turned 18 this past March.
My aunt told him no twice so he stopped talking about it to her. So he met with a Marine Recruiter, Army Recruiter, Air Force Recruiter, and a Navy Recruiter all by himself and thought it out, then chose the Navy. Then as his graduation present to HER at the end of May (for being a great mother and raising him right and being her first to graduate), he showed her he enlisted and he's leaving for boot in mid July. She freaked out and cried just like the rest of the family.

Thats what the family gets for not backing his ass up. I knew the whole time but promised I wouldn't tell. He needed the support from somewhere so I had to be there for him.

He did what he had to because he knew if he talked about it more our family would try talking him out of it. I'm proud of him for that.

PooleeRogers08
June 20th, 2008, 11:21
Sometimes that's just what it takes. I wouldn't let anything come between me and the Corps. Parent's never want their kids to go off, especially when they haven't experienced the military themselves, but as the saying goes, it can't always be someone elses son.

Marine_wannabe
June 20th, 2008, 11:30
I would go see my recruiter my self if I had a vehicle, my dad works right across the street from the recruiters office but he still won't take me, and when I run on my road I don't feel like I'm getting any where.

And that is were I got my signature.

PooleeRogers08
June 20th, 2008, 11:45
I swear, I nearly tear up every time I see it..

How far of a run is it to your recruiters office? That would be some moto schiessa.

You don't need to worry so much about talking to your recruiter right now as you need to worry about getting conditioned. when you turn 17, the recruiter can come to your home and talk to you. So for now, work out how ever you can.

Trapper
June 20th, 2008, 12:01

Is there a special trick to running and keeping your breath?

PooleeRogers08
June 20th, 2008, 17:20
Find a partner, sing a cadence, and focus on anything but the run.

I know where you're coming from because I struggle too. I leave for Boot in a matter of weeks, and if for any reason I fail recruit training, it will be because I am a poor runner.

Start off with some side straddle hops, and stretch for a decent amount of time.

You have plenty of time to get in shape, just find a good SLOW pace, run as far and long as you can, and when you feel yourself stopping... SPRINT. Go as hard as you can until you have to come back to a jog, but DO NOT STOP or walk for any reason. If you have to slow to a walk, that means you outpaced yourself, and you need to slow down.
