I have a son and daughter who both went to bootcamp in PI. I have two other sons one who is talking to a recruiter and one who is still in high school. We now live in California and I have asked two recruiters if my son would be allowed to go to PI as his sister and brother did even though he is in the SD area. One recruiter said yes because there was a family tradition established. The other recruiter said probably not. My family has been planning to move to the east coast in the near future and now we are thinking we may have to move our plans up in order to get another PI graduate. Does anyone know of any "tradition" rules for bootcamp?

First of, Welcome aborad Ms. Gallimore. Secondly, I have not hear of the established family tradition, but it is worth the shot looking into it, since our Corps is all about tradition. There was a recruiter on board, but I don't know where he has been.

My son said he wanted to join as soon as possible, he will be 20 this month, but he would wait until after the move in order to go to PI. I have asked a third recruiter who said not possible then he asked someone and was told it is. So I am back to where I started....two yes and two no answers.... We don't want to waste our time nor that of the recruiters, their jobs are hard enough.

well this i know...
When i leave next summer i have the option of going to san diego (cuz im in texas), or going to PI becuase my dad did.
so you can go to PI becuase of family, and i would have to imagine that a brother or sister establishes as much of a tradition as my father.

A great big WELCOME, DGallimore21!! It's great to have you on board. How lucky are you to have 2 Marine children and most surely another in the making?!?!? Congratulation's are definitely in order and please thank those fine Marines of yours for their service to our Country! You'll find this board an awesome place with lots of friendly members, good conversation, great information and all around fun ~ jump right on in!
I have heard of the "family tradition" thing, but i'm not sure of how it works nor if it's still being used. I say, if you can't get a straight answer from the local recruiter...go above him till you get the answer you want (oh and when you get that answer, be sure it's in writing before he signs on that dotted line):)

Welcome aboard its good to have you. On paper it is possible but why would they want to go to a substandard boot camp when they could go to the best right down the road. Just because ones brothers had to go to Paris Hilton Island doesn't mean that they too should stoop.
All crap aside it may be of benefit to them to go to MCRDSD as the likely hood of staying in Cali would be increased then they can visit dear old mom on a regular. Its a thought and being I am full of crap today(see my Stanley cup post )I can't offer you another option.

Yes it is called the Legacy program. My son went to PI even though we live in Texas because both my father and I went there.

I have heard of this also. I have a friend who went to San Diego because he had 3 oter family memebers go there before him. Even though he lives in al ocation that would permit him to go to PI
