If a President became President by the former dying, resigning or leaving office for any other reason before their term is up, does the current President get 8 years after the next election to be President or does their current term count for a full four years and they can only serve 4 more years?

So if the President is 3 1/2 years into his first term, and dies of a heart attack. The VP takes over. New election takes place and he wins. He cannot run again after that? That sounds odd. That is if he decides to run in the first election after taking over... Still sounds odd. Now my interest is piqued. How do we find out. I looked on the Constitution site by the government and could not find it.

So it is up to 8 years, not just 8. That makes sense.
