People who know me know I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I don’t always do or say what is right, I am just an individual who tries to do his best and many times errs in the process. I usually write something and then have my daughter tell me how it should read because she is the smart one, not me. As we approach Memorial Day I seem to reflect more on the past, I guess because that's what Memorial Day is all about. Maybe that’s because I am retired and getting older, I am not sure. Maybe it’s because I see our country not embracing the ideals I was brought up to believe. I don’t possess the ability to resolve our nation’s problems, but I participate in the process that helps us change direction from time to time. I see it as important to my attitude in life and always have the hope and faith that life will get better.

I served my country and did not make the policies that we implemented, we just carried them out. Because we were the instrument used to carry our policy our generation somehow became responsible for all the wrong done by the policy makers and we received the retribution for anything negative. But wasn’t it the “Greatest Generation” who sent us there in the first place and somehow we were denied the recognition of serving honorably? Our country seems to have come full circle with today's military and I am grateful for that.

The following letter explains my feelings about Memorial Day as my ability to put it into words is inadequate. I have had this since around 1997, just not sure, I don’t even recall who Bobby Ross is but he said words I will remember. Some will disagree with my comments, or the content of this letter, but that is OK. We served for your right to degrade everything that is important to us the same as I did serving for what I believed was honorable, the guys on my right and the guys on my left. I still pray for my friends and all the others who did not return.

Semper Fi!

What Is Memorial Day?

by

Bobby Ross

As my years whirl past me like dry grass in a spring breeze, sometimes I can hardly remember my experiences in war. Fighting for my country in my youth seems such a long time ago, and so unimportant compared to my new insight to age which is my back pain, or my make-it or break-it business appointments tomorrow morning, or my visit to my grandchild next month. So when I looked at the calendar this year and mistakenly told my friends and associates that Memorial Day was on the 30th of May, only to find out pointedly from some "expert" that Memorial Day was to be celebrated this year on the 25th of May, I became aware that I had lost something.

So, some "big shot" has changed the traditional Memorial Day on the 30th of May to the observed Memorial Day on the 25th of May, which coincidentally allows for a national 3 day holiday. Such is commercialism's capitalistic American display. But why did I feel so stricken, like I had abandoned an old friend from long ago?

Oh boy, another 3 day holiday!!! Memorial Day!!!! Maybe we can go camping. Or, maybe we can go to the beach. This Memorial Day is gonna be fun! Such is the inconsiderate, thoughtless approach to this meaningful, and consecrated moment representing one three hundred and sixty-fifth of our year. What is the meaning of Memorial Day? Is it merely a 3 day escape from our worldly duties? Or, is it the official beginning of summer? Let's sell some more hot dogs at the ballpark.

Many souls have been sacrificed in duty to America since the birth of our wondrous country. Those souls float in a heavenly place, minus their future here on earth. That future was forfeited so that our nation could be a land where the people who live upon it are free souls, living their lives as they prefer. Raising their children as they want. To do with their lives what they desire. Those who gave their lives so that we, the living, can do what we want freely, those are the souls we pay respect to on Memorial Day. This is why it is a sacred day. And, this is why it is an important day.

Without retrospect, sacrifice is mute. Old Glory, our flag, does not wave by accident. It flies because of sacrifice. The color red in it some say represents the blood given by those who fell, those who clawed, and those who cried in horrible pain to do their duty. At least I believe that. The pigment red on our flag reminds me when I see it waving on a sunny, end of May Day, that there are souls floating, millions upon millions of souls, who are not with us in real, flesh anymore. They are amongst our heroes, with their friends and loved ones who gave more than anyone should be required to give. Most did not want to give. Many were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then there were those, many of those, who knew exactly what they were giving. They moved forward knowing they would most likely lose their life so the mission would be accomplished.
Fools! Some say that. Of course, you would have to be a fool to give up your life for whatever the cause. For a flag? Foolish! For a country! More foolish! For freedom! What freedom is there in death?

Yes, fools they may have been, but their numbers are awesome! And they help add up to the meaning of Memorial Day. Very few Americans know of many of their fellow countrymen and women who died in war. Who can trace those in the family tree who fought in one of America's wars? And what about those who died in the peacetime military? We are a busy people. We have business to do. We have kids to get off to school. We have chores to accomplish. We are a spirited society, seeking ways to improve ourselves and our communities. We are a helpful populace, always there when the going gets tough to help those who have suffered the tragedies of nature, whether it is a hurricane or a famine, Americans are always the first on the scene worldwide bearing their gifts of human spirit and abundance. This is why it is so puzzling that the meaning of Memorial Day seems to lack substance to many of our own people. Even with the day itself being put back to accommodate a holiday schedule fixed by some entity no one knows, yet powerful enough to do so, the day itself lacks consequence.

Americans take things for granted. We have so much. Just go to a supermarket and stand there for a few minutes and look around. So very much, so many choices. Americans don't realize that these choices are not available in most of the rest of the world. Our shelves are full. In the
rest of the world, they are often empty or offer very limited selections.

Those American fighting men and women whose souls are floating actually made available those wondrous choices we have every day of our American lives, and most of our children have no idea whatsoever what this means.

If we do not teach them, then they will grow up thinking, and believing, all these marvelous selections came without circumstance, without anything, with no meaning. They are just there. Somewhere along the line, we as a nation need to stop, and smell the rose on a Veteran's grave. We need to lift a cup of cheer to those floating spirits who were our onetime American warriors, and toast them with a salutation. We have not come so far with our technological miracles of this millennium to turn our backs on formality, shed our eyes from custom, and silence our vocal cords from honor and glory. To do so is to leave us hollow. To leave us filled with only that which is desolate and lacks potential. This is not the real meaning of Memorial Day. The real meaning requires reminding, storytelling, wisdom being passed to a younger generation and understanding being certified by those who remember the horrors of war. Without this core, our society cannot remain genuine. It becomes contemptible. It rots from within. These floating souls of our American warriors are a powerful force, for they live within our hearts. They constantly seek justification for their contributions, and they are real within each and every one of us. Such is what substance means, and where character is developed, individually, as a community, and as a nation.

America leaves the 20th Century as the most powerful nation the world has ever known. We enter this next century with vast responsibilities. Our children must bear this promise. We cannot turn our backs on these descendants, nor can we do so upon ourselves. Memorial Day offers us the opportunity to express a moment of silence. I only speak as one, as one who has bared his soul to the dread of war. So my father did, and his father's father before him and their souls float amongst the multitudes. My mother and her mother held their Veterans after they returned from war, tears streaming down their cheeks in gratitude for their safe return. And there were those in my ancestry who did not return from war. And their mothers' tears soaked the pillows on beds for generations to sleep upon. Their souls are the dreams that drift amongst the floating, gathering at the end of May in the breeze of summer coming, in the cool glass of lemonade at the child's street side stand, in the cheers at the ball game from the crowd rooting their team to victory and enjoying the best hot dogs in the world. Let us all stop for a moment, whether it is on the traditional day, or the observed day of Memorial Day, or even at the end of May, and reach for those floating souls. Let us reveal to them how much we cherish their sacrifice for our free people.

Let these memories harvest our recognition of the meaning of Memorial Day in a very simple word. And let that word, simply stated be: Thanks.

I, myself, will be missing the Armed Forces Day parade here in Greenville. I've been looking forward to it since
last year's parade, but my wife made other plans without checking with me. #&*# ( Sorry, please excuse the
Have a great day today everyone. Enjoy being with your loved ones and remember our family here.

Good morning!

I am pretty excited to share with you all my progress on a project I began on February 15, 2013. While the initial intent of the project is no longer in play, it hasn't stopped me from continuing my journey.

On February 10, 2013, I was at one of my son's wrestling meets and I stepped on the scale. With clothes on, I weighed over 230 lbs standing at 5 feet 8 inches. I was unhappy in my marriage and was unhappy in life. I decided two things that day. Number 1, I was going to lose 60 lbs by August and number 2, I was going to divorce my wife of 10 years.

My journey started on February 15, 2013 when I weighed in at 230 lbs. I began changing my eating habits and lost weight right away. On February 20th, I weighed 219.6.

Over the next few weeks, my work decided to have a weight loss contest and I was extremely excited about this part so that I could use it to meet my goal. On March 12th, I weighed 216.2. I was on my way! On March 16th, I weighed in at 213.6. Still losing. On March 26th, I weighed 211 and I was feeling it! Then March 29th came for the weighin at work.

So on March 29th, I weighed in officially for work at 219.4 lbs. Keep in mind that I weighed in at around 2 p.m. not early in the morning. I gained weight from the 26th but still had lost weight overall. Almost 11 pound loss from when I started. Disappointed but more determined than ever, I stepped up my workouts.

I still was losing weight from changing my eating habits but I wanted to see a much fast rate of loss so I started running. Not far at first but running nonetheless. First run that I recorded was 1.5 miles in about 35 minutes. I kept at it and continued to eat right (1200 calories a day) and run continuously.

By April 6th, I had gotten myself down to 208.8! Sweet! The workouts were paying off! The next day, 205.6! Even sweeter! I had hit my first plateau. No matter what i did, I couldn't lose any more weight. I went further than before, tried going faster. Ate the right foods and still struggled. I didn't give in though. I kept with my program and continued to drive forward.

Finally, on April 16th, I began to see progress again! 202.8. Whew! I thought I was done for prior tot this weighin. I was feeling good about the second weighin for work and probably got a little lazy...not but that week, we had some major rainstorms and I was only able to get out twice and then for only 6 miles total.

On April 26th, I had my next breakthrough when I reached a pretty significant milestone. I finally was under 200 lbs. I don't know if I ever could remember when I had been under 200 lbs in recent memory but here I was sitting at 199.4! I weighed in on April 29th for my second weighin for work and weighed in at 207 initially but I went and ran 4 miles and came back and weighed in again. 201.6. At 17.8 lb loss in 4 weeks. Celebrate good times, come on! 8% loss in weight in 4 weeks is pretty good.

Of course, I hit my plateau again. Couldn't lose for a long time until May 1st when I got down to 198.2. Then on May 2nd, 197.4. Stuck again so I stepped up the distances on my workouts. Monday was a four mile day, Tuesday was a 5, Wednesday was 6.21, Thursday 7.05 and Friday was 8.02! On Thursday, I saw another decrease to 196.8. Pounds were not coming off as easily as before but they were coming off. Finally today after my 8 mile run, I weighed again and this time I was coming in at 195.6.

This is where I am at right now. Since February 15th I have lost 34.4 pounds and still have a long ways to go but I am now at a point where I know that when I set my mind to something, I can accomplish it! I will fear very little (except maybe the loss of my knees due to running like a madman.

In addition to the 34.4 lbs I have lost, I have logged 166 miles on the road since March 21st. That averages out to 3.32 miles a day with one week where I couldn't run much due to the weather. If you ever want to see my workout sheet, you can view every workout I have done here:

Thanks for listening and have a great weekend, Jarheads!

Maureen Scott is an ardent American patriot who was born in Pittsburgh , PA , and retired to Richmond, VA , in 2000. Free from the nine-to-five grind of writing for employers and clients, she began writing political commentary to please herself and express her convictions.

The accomplishment of which she is most proud is her volunteer work at an Army base where she looked into the eyes and hearts of the service members who protect our country.

Our Pledge of Allegiance, a military band playing the National Anthem, and the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, inspire her passion and views. Her life is guided by a firm belief that truth is the most important virtue, and that God knows what He is doing with her.

Obama appears to be a tormented man filled with resentment, anger, and disdain for anyone of an opinion or view other than his. He acts in the most hateful, spiteful, malevolent, vindictive ways in order to manipulate and maintain power and control over others. Perhaps, because, as a child, he grew up harboring an abiding bitterness toward the U.S. that was instilled in him by his family and mentors. It seems to have never left him.

It is not the color of his skin that is a problem - for anyone in America .

Rather it is the blackness that fills his soul and the hollowness in his heart where there should be abiding pride and love for this country.

Think: Have we ever heard Obama speak lovingly of the U.S. or its people, with deep appreciation and genuine respect for our history, our customs, our sufferings and our blessings? Has he ever revealed that, like most patriotic Americans, he gets "goose bumps" when a band plays "The Star Spangled Banner," or sheds a tear when he hears a beautiful rendition of " America the Beautiful?" Does his heart burst with pride when millions of American flags wave on a National holiday - or someone plays "taps" on a trumpet? Has he ever shared the admiration of the military, as we as lovers of those who keep us free, feel when soldiers march by? It is doubtful because Obama did not grow up sharing our experiences or our values. He did not sit at the knee of a Grandfather or Uncle who showed us his medals and told us about the bravery of his fellow troops as they tramped through foreign lands to keep us free. He didn't have grandparents who told stories of suffering and then coming to America , penniless, and the opportunities they had for building a business and life for their children.

Away from this country as a young child, Obama didn't delight in being part of America and its greatness. He wasn't singing our patriotic songs in kindergarten, or standing on the roadside for a holiday parade and eating a hot dog, or lighting sparklers around a campfire on July 4th as fireworks exploded over head, or placing flags on the gravesites of fallen and beloved American heroes.

Rather he was separated from all of these experiences and doesn't really understand us and what it means to be an American. He is void of the basic emotions that most feel regarding this country and insensitive to the instinctive pride we have in our national heritage. His opinions were formed by those who either envied us or wanted him to devalue the United States and the traditions and patriotism that unites us.

He has never given a speech that is filled with calm, reassuring, complimentary, heartfelt statements about all the people in the U.S. Or one that inspires us to be better and grateful and proud that in a short time our country became a leader, and a protector of many. Quite the contrary, his speeches always degenerate into mocking, ridiculing tirades as he faults our achievements as well as any critics or opposition for the sake of a laugh, or to bolster his ego. He uses his Office to threaten and create fear while demeaning and degrading any American who oppose his policies and actions. A secure leader, who has noble self-esteem and not false confidence, refrains from showing such dread of critics and displaying a cocky, haughty attitude.

Mostly, his time seems to be spent causing dissention, unrest, and anxiety among the people of America , rather than uniting us (even though he was presented to us as the "Great Uniter"). He creates chaos for the sake of keeping people separated, envious, aggrieved and ready to argue. Under his leadership Americans have been kept on edge, rather than in a state of comfort and security. He incites people to be aggressive toward, and disrespectful of, those of differing opinions. And through such behavior, Obama has lowered the standards for self-control and mature restraint to the level of street-fighting gangs, when he should be raising the bar for people to strive toward becoming more considerate, tolerant, self-disciplined, self-sustaining, and self-assured.

Not a day goes by that he is not attempting to defy our laws, remove our rights, over-ride established procedures, install controversial appointees, enact divisive mandates, and assert a dictatorial form of power.

Never has there been a leader of this great landwho used such tactics to harm and hurt the people and this country.

Never have we had a President who spoke with a caustic, evil tongueagainst the citizenry rather than present himself as a soothing, calming and trustworthy force.

Never, in this country, have we experienced how muchstress one man can cause a nation of people - on a daily basis!

Obama has promoted the degeneration of peace, civility, and quality of cooperation between us. He thrives on tearing us down, rather than building us up. He is the Architect of the decline of America , and the epitome of a Demagogue.
