I would have to say Chesty Puller for He was the only Marine to Earned five Navy Crosses, which is the nation’s second highest award for valor, he 37 years in the Corps, and if I recall correctly he retired at the rank of lieutenant general. and he went to guard the gates of Heaven on Oct. 11, 1971, at the age of 73. I have to agree with you on that, but I still like Oliver North.

You mean the Man Best Known as The unrepentant fall guy in the Iran-Contra scandal, the Marine who donned his uniform and admitted that he acted illegally, but out of patriotism. Even tho his felony convictions were eventually overturned, and I believe it depends on who you talk, North was either a traitorous drug smuggler or a national hero who saved Central America from communism.

I picked SgtMaj Dan Daly. I have always listed him as one of my heros.

Well there was much more to the story than made the papers. Lets just say he stuck it to the Iranians pretty good. I doubt it is classified anymore but I am not going to put it on the internet that's for sure

My older brother, a LTC/retired/USMC, was also in the Intelligence community and knew "Jolly Ollie". Said he wasn't anything special, except that he knew how to "promote" (market) himself and kiss ass. I agree with you -- having donned the uniform and served honorably, only to turn into a crook. Like they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely and Oliver North is no exception. He's a hero in his own mind!

If anything is responsible for preventing South America from going Communist, it is the Monroe Doctrine, written many years before Ollie North was even a twinkle in his daddy's eye. While I don't think he, alone, is responsible for the Iran-Contra affair, he was guilty of breaking the law, thus dishonoring both the uniform he wore and the United States of America.

I went with Chesty mainly because I have read so much about him and not enough on the other great Marines on the list. So much more reading to catch up on. Maybe I had better head for the library now.

    GOODNIGHT, CHESTY.......... WHEREVER YOU ARE.

I kind of am surprised that nobody selected nobody has picked Pappy yet. One can still catch black sheep on History Channel on Sunday mornings.

I was walking through Arlington last Nov 10th (Happy Birthday) and just happened across Pappy's gravesite. Amazing who you walk over if you pay attention while up there.Just thought I'd share that.
